UNC Wilmington 1B Tanner Thach enters NCAA Transfer Portal
UNC Wilmington first baseman Tanner Thach has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos has confirmed. After three strong seasons with the program, Thach is moving on from the Coastal Athletic Conference.
Thach is also expected to be selected in the upcoming 2025 MLB Draft, so there is a chance that he could turn pro before next season. This likely won’t stop him from committing to a new school out of the portal.
Thach has the numbers to back up his draft status, batting .325 for the Seahawks this past season, including 12 home runs and 46 RBIs. He helped lead UNCW to a 34-24 record, including a 19-8 mark against conference opponents.
He was most productive during his college career as a sophomore, however. Hitting 27 home runs, he more than doubled his total from this past season in 2024. Thach has hit 54 home runs so far his during his college baseball career.
Thach also enjoyed success during his appearances in the Cape Cod League each of the last two summers. In 2024, Thach played in 37 games with the Cotuit Kettleers where he logged 38 hits, slapped 25 RBIs, drew 14 walks and hit eight home runs during that stretch.
In terms of his pro potential, it will be Thach second time in the MLB Draft cycle. He was previously selected in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants out of high school.

If Thach decides to return to college, he will have one year of eligibility remaining. With as strong of a resume as his, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some he garner more than a couple of Power Four offers before the draft.
The 2025 MLB Draft is scheduled for July 13th through July 14th in Atlanta. Thach is allowed to return to the school he commits to if he decides to not sign a contract with the team that drafts him, unlike in football and basketball.
