Updated 2023 Big 12 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings
The Early Signing Period starts Wednesday, and recruiting races across the country are boiling hot right now as teams look to lock in their recruits. It is even hotter among conference rivals looking to gain any advantage upon their local foes for the next few seasons.
The Big 12 is a little different as the conference will expand to 14 teams next football season, expanding the footprint of the conference and adding new rivalries.
Here is the 2023 Big 12 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings, as of Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, including the four programs joining in the future.
1. Texas (93.363)
3 five-stars | 10 four-stars | 9 three-stars | 22 total recruits
Top Commit: New Orleans Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning, No. 1 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Sometimes recruiting classes are fairly simple to summarize. The 2023 Texas class is one of those situations. The Longhorns got Arch Manning. No matter what else happened, this class was going to be a win. But to add two other five-star commits and three other top-50 prospects to team with Manning, Steve Sarkisian is one of the big winners of the 2023 recruiting cycle.
2. Oklahoma (92.3300)
2 five-stars | 13 four-stars | 8 three-stars | 24 total recruits
Top Commit: Denton (Tex.) Guyer quarterback Jackson Arnold, No. 8 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Jackson Arnold had a standout senior season in Texas’ top level of high school football, giving Sooners fans plenty to get excited about at that position. But Arnold is far from the only one to get Oklahoma fans pumped after a disappointing 2022 season. Five-star EDGE Adepoju Adebawore is an athletic marvel. Four-star Jaquaize Pettaway is a dynamic wide receiver. Four-star athlete Jacobe Johnson is a gifted athlete.
3. TCU (89.468)
0 five-stars | 8 four-stars | 15 three-stars | 23 total recruits
Top Commit: Garland (Texas) Naaman Forest four-star interior offensive lineman Markis Deal, No. 131 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Sonny Dykes should get all the credit in the world for taking TCU to the College Football Playoff this year. But he should also be praised for his job on the recruiting trail. The Horned Frogs jumped up from 34th in 2022 to 18th in 2023 thanks to Dykes. As expected, it’s a very heavy Texas class with all four-star players coming from the Lone Star State.
4. Texas Tech (88.388)
0 five-stars | 4 four-stars | 23 three-stars | 27 total recruits
Top Commit: Post (Texas) EDGE Isaiah Crawford, No. 211 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Give Joey McGuire credit for what he has done with this Texas Tech program. He has helped turn around the Red Raiders and bring momentum on and off the field to Lubbock. He has emphasized in-state recruit and delivered this year with a class ranked 18 spots better than 2022.
5. Baylor (87.754)
0 five-stars | 3 four-stars | 17 three-stars | 21 total recruits
Top Commit: Arlington (Texas) Lamar Vikings offensive tackle Isaiah Robinson, No. 234 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Dripping Springs (Texas) quarterback Austin Novosad said in the summer that he was locked into his commitment to the Bears, but Oregon was able to flip him on National Signing Day. It is a blow to the recruiting class but there’s still plenty of depth across the board.
6. Kansas State (87.305)
0 five-stars | 1 four-stars | 25 three-stars | 26 total recruits
Top Commit: Maize (Kan.) quarterback Avery Johnson, No. 76 in On3 Consensus
Summary: This is a Big 12 recruiting cycle that is defined by quarterbacks and Johnson has the potential to be big-time for Wildcats. He is ranked in the top 100 by three of the four recruiting services. He is the only Blue Chip prospect but the Wildcats class is 22 spots higher this year nationally than in 2022.
7 UCF (86.568)
0 five-stars | 2 four-stars | 12 three-stars | 14 total recruits
Top Commit: Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola defensive lineman John Walker, No. 100 in On3 Consensus
Summary: It is a small class right now for Gus Malzahn, who lost twin brothers four-star twin brother linebackers Andrew Harris and Michael Harris on Sunday. The loss of the brothers is a big blow to the recruiting class. But they still have Walker, who is one of the biggest recruits in recent memory for the Knights, and Isaiah Nixon, who flipped today from Florida.

8. West Virginia (86.437)
0 five-stars | 2 four-stars | 17 three-stars | 20 total recruits
Top Commit: Uniontown (Pa.) Laurel Highlands wide receiver Rodney Gallagher, No. No. 263 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Gallagher and fellow four-star wide receiver Traylon Ray make up a dynamic pass catching duo at the top of the Mountaineers recruiting class. They also have On3 four-star EDGE Zachariah Keith, who is ranked as the No. 229 overall recruit in the 2023 On300.
9. Iowa State (86.170)
0 five-stars | 1 four-stars | 19 three-stars | 20 total recruits
Top Commit: Ankeny (Iowa) quarterback JJ Kohl, No. 171 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Kohl was a breakout star at the Elite 11 camp setting this summer before fading a little bit from the national consciousness this fall. He is still a consensus four-star recruit and a major pick up for the Cyclones. He is the lone four-star in the class.
10. Houston (85.521)
0 five-stars | 2 four-stars | 14 three-stars | 16 total recruits
Top Commit: Houston Dekaney wide receiver Jonah Wilson, No. 269 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Dana Holgorsen has a solid recruiting class he is brining into the Big 12, although it does fall outside the top 50 nationally. Last cycle, the Cougars were No. 48 in the national rankings.
11. Oklahoma State (85.419)
0 five-stars | 0 four-stars | 17 three-stars | 17 total recruits
Top Commit: Gretna (Neb.) quarterback Zane Flores, No. 441 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Flores is a key signing in the group but the Cowboys recruiting class pales compares to the 2022 class. The 2022 class ranked 23rd in the country with a class score of 88.24. This year’s group ranks 51st with a score of 85.30, a nearly 3.0 point difference.
12. Cincinnati (84.109)
0 five-stars | 1 four-stars | 9 three-stars | 10 total recruits
Top Commit: Ironton (Ohio) linebacker Trevor Carter, No. 384 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Carter is the top player in the On3 Consensus, but this class is right now all about Brady Drogosh. Drogosh is the No. 49 overall prospect and No. 5 quarterback in the 2023 cycle, according to On3. He has the potential to be the difference marker for the Bearcats when they make the move to the Big 12.
13. BYU (83.788)
0 five-stars | 0 four-stars | 15 three-stars | 15 total recruits
Top Commit: Provo (Utah) Timpview defensive tackle Siale Esera, No. 495 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Kalani Sitake has goes from having the second-best recruiting class among independent schools to last among Big 12 schools. The class is built with mostly West Coast players.
14. Kansas (84.430)
0 five-stars | 0 four-stars | 12 three-stars | 12 total recruits
Top Commit: Eudora (Kan.) tight end Jaden Hamm, No. 416 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Hamm joined the Jayhawks recruiting class Monday after decommitting from Arkansas earlier in the week. The Jayhawks still have a lowly-rated Power Five recruiting class, but it is a stark improvement from 2022. The 2022 class was ranked 126th in the country, the worst of any Power Five program.
