Updated Big 12 Championship game scenarios: Arizona State clinches spot, three teams still alive

Arizona State has officially punched its ticket to the Big 12 Championship game. The Sun Devils defeated rival Arizona in a dominant 49-7 victory on Saturday but still needed some other things to go their way.

They got it when TCU beat Cincinnati, clinching the appearance in the conference title game according to David Hale of ESPN. Now the Sun Devils will await one of three potential opponents.

The remaining other three teams in contention are BYU, Colorado and Iowa State, and they need a few things to fall their way with games still to play. That includes Iowa State, which currently leads Kansas State by a score of 24-14 at halftime. The Sun Devils got another huge game from Cam Skattebo as he rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Additionally, quarterback Sam Leavitt threw for 291 yards and three scores in what was an explosive day from the ASU offense.

Arizona State has come out of nowhere to thrust itself into a spot in the Big 12 Championship after wins against Kansas State and BYU in the two weeks prior to beating the Wildcats. The Sun Devils have won five straight contests to close the regular season.

Iowa State currently leads Kansas State by a score of 24-21 with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter at the time of this writing. The Cyclones will hope to hold on and that BYU can defeat Houston later this evening to clinch their spot in the Big 12 Championship game.

For whichever team ends up hoisting the Big 12 trophy, a spot in the College Football Playoff is up for grabs.
