Updated schedule, bracket, TV times for Day 5 at College World Series
The College World Series field has been whittled down to six as we get closer to knowing which two teams will compete for the 2023 crown. Virginia and Stanford have already been sent home with losses on Sunday and Monday, respectively, and two more school will join them in packing their bags Tuesday.
Day 5 of CWS action at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha will feature a pair of elimination contests, beginning with TCU and Oral Roberts at 2 p.m. ET. The two teams already met once on the opening day. The Golden Eagles won that game 6-5 after a three-RBI home run from Blaze Brothers in the top of the ninth inning.
However, after ORU fell to Florida 5-4 on Sunday despite loading the bases in the eight and ninth innings, the Horned Frogs will get their shot at revenge. TCU stayed alive with a 4-3 win against Virginia in Sunday’s afternoon game to earn the chance.
Tennessee staved off elimination in the first game of Monday, defeating Stanford 6-4. The Vols found themselves down 4-0 after the first four innings, but came back to tie things up in the fifth, where they recorded six of their 13 hits to score four runs. They took the lead for good in the seventh after Zane Denton grounded out to bring in the winning run. Blake Burke then scored on a wild pitch to give Tennessee a two-run cushion it never relinquished.
The Vols will again face LSU, which they lost to 6-3 in their first game of CWS play. The Tigers did their best to take out No. 1 seed Wake Forest in the winner’s bracket Monday, but ultimately fell 3-2. The game was tied at 2-2 entering the eighth inning before Bennett Lee made two huge plays to get the Demon Deacons the win.
First he made an incredible tag on Tre’ Morgan at home plate to prevent the Tigers from taking a lead in the top of the inning. Then after Wake got out of the inning with a double play, Lee recorded an RBI single to bring in the go-ahead run. The Demon Deacons have still yet to lose throughout the entire NCAA Tournament.
