SMU had an excellent season and after winning the AAC, felt that it had a good case to make it to the New Year’s Six. However, that didn’t happen, with the Group of Five bid going to Liberty instead. Because of that, it will be interesting to follow the mentality of the Mustangs in the Fenway Bowl. Are they frustrated with where they are or are they trying to prove a point?
Boston College, meanwhile, snuck into bowl season with a 6-6 record. The Eagles are also trying to break out of a difficult skid to end the season after losing their final three games to end the year in ACC play.
The Eagles have, however, been active in the transfer portal as Boston College looks to the future. Still, that has also come with losses in the portal as well. 12 players are already in the transfer portal from the Eagles, including four running backs and two wide receivers. Add in Ryan O’Keefe‘s medical retirement and star quarterback Thomas Castellanos is going to have very little help on the offensive side of the ball.

Still, Castellanos is a dual threat who has thrown for 2,146 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing for 957 yards and another 11 touchdowns.
SMU has also felt some losses in the transfer portal. As of now, seven Mustangs have hit the transfer portal. That includes four defensive linemen and an edge rusher, so depth could become an issue for SMU in the Fenway Bowl.
Naturally, with the game being played in Boston in late December, weather could become a major factor in this game. That’s something that the Eagles, who are only traveling from just outside the city, should be more accustomed to than the Mustangs.
Another interesting aspect of this game is that the Fenway Bowl pits AAC vs. ACC schools against one another. However, thanks to conference realignment, this will be a conference battle moving forward as SMU moves into the ACC.
