Urban Meyer: Alabama, Texas, Oregon present major challenge for CFP Committee
Debate rages on with the latest College Football Playoff rankings regarding the one-loss teams. Oregon currently has the top spot on the bunch, coming in at No. 6. Texas and Alabama follow the Ducks, with there being a lot of discussion about who deserved to be behind the undefeated teams.
Current FOX analyst Urban Meyer gave his take on the situation, saying the scenario is a tough one for the selection committee. He did preface it by saying everything is going to work itself out, as it usually has during the four-team playoff era.
But he does believe Alabama, Texas, and Oregon are playing better than anybody in college football at the moment. He believes all three will wind up making the College Football Playoff when Selection Sunday comes in a few weeks.
“Reality is, the College Football Playoff committee is doing the right thing,” Meyer said during On3’s Urban Take with Tim May. “It’s all going to play itself out. The issue is not going to be the undefeated teams, it’s going to be the one-loss teams.
“To say Alabama, Texas, and Oregon are not as good as anyone in the country right now — you’re mistaken. Because you push play and you watch the film, the All-22 against who they play and the style of offense, defense, and the athletes on the field. Those three teams, to me, to say they’re not in the top four, you’re mistaken. At the end of the day, I think they will be.”

With Meyer thinking the three one-loss teams end up in the playoff, you have to assume one of the Big Ten programs — Michigan or Ohio State — is the other. This would mean Florida State winds up losing at some point or the other, currently having an undefeated record.
Either way, as Meyer said, things will play themselves out. Oregon has a couple of potential resume boosters on the schedule, with USC being the first on Saturday. Oregon State is going to be another tough test in the Civil War.
Texas and Alabama have no breathing room either, needing to win out to remain alive in the College Football Playoff. If both make it to their respective conference championship games, ranked teams will be waiting for them.
No definite way is available to rank the three-loss teams at the moment. Sure, it causes discussion at the moment but things can and should change over the next three weeks.
