Former head coach Urban Meyer recently revealed the story of how an LSU Tigers fan threw pee on him in 2007 when he led the Florida Gators into Death Valley.

The conversation came up on The Triple Option. There, they were talking about the toughest and most intimidating environments in the sport. So, for Meyer, memories of playing in Baton Rouge at Tigers Stadium came back to him.

“Awful is a term I like to say,” Urban Meyer said. “It was awful and the worst one ever is 2007, we were defending national champs and we come rolling into LSU, which by the way is the most ridiculous atmosphere — I have them and Penn State — just absolutely ridiculous. I remember the old lady, she’s in a walker, she’s walking, and as our buses come by she stops and takes her hands off the walker and just [two middle fingers]. The double bird, staring right at me. I was like, ‘What in the Hell?'”

Florida and LSU are rivals and the stretch between 2006 and 2008 was one of the most competitive for the two programs. The Gators won national championships in 2006 and 2008 while the Tigers won in 2007, helping to contribute to a charged atmosphere in the stadium.

“Then, as we entered the stadium in 2007, I mean, it’s maybe a 10-foot wide walkway as you walk in the damn stadium. Nasty. Saying things, mean looking. This one guy just yelling, staring right at me, and he’s right off to my left. I have two police officers with me as I’m walking in there and our players, we kind of warned them to stay away from that nonsense,” Meyer said.

“One guy is holding a cup and as I get closer to him, we make eye contact and he’s just screaming at me and I wanted to take a swing at the guy but right then he takes [the cup] and he dumps it on me. I thought it was a beer and I dropped my bags and I go after him. One cop grabs me and one cop kind of goes after him but it’s a chain link fence and he just disappears right behind it. The players saw it. We go in and I lost my mind. Then I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. I thought that was beer.’ It didn’t smell like beer. So, I had to jump and take a quick shower and figure it out.”

Florida was coming into the game off a loss and LSU was ranked first in the country when the two met in 2007. It ended up being a battle with LSU winning 28-24 on the back of a fourth-quarter comeback. From there, the Tigers went on to win a national championship.

“The locker room was insanity. Dan Mullen was my offensive coordinator. [Tim] Tebow was on that team. The players lost their minds. [Brandon] Spikes and everybody. It was a great game. They went for it on five fourth downs in the fourth quarter. Ended up winning the national championship, but that was the worst.”

Urban Meyer took over the Florida program in 2005. From that point forward, he had a record of 3-3 against LSU, only winning in Baton Rouge once.
