Urban Meyer slams door on coaching rumors: ‘I have no interest’
If your team has a head coaching vacancy or is expecting to have one after this season, it’s likely that Urban Meyer’s name has come up a time or two. However, the former Ohio State and Florida head coach has once again put any of those thoughts to rest.
Meyer spoke about his potential candidacy for coaching jobs during ‘Urban’s Take’ with Tim May on Thursday. To him, the question isn’t even worth asking anymore because he says the people who truly know him understand that he has “no interest” in returning to the ranks.
“I got my tight circle of friends, I go to the Big Noon Kickoff, and I enjoy my life. It’s not like people are asking me because people who know me know I have no interest,” said Meyer. “I love what I’m doing.”
Much of this buzz surrounding Meyer’s potential return to college football comes from the opening at Michigan State. With the Spartans, the highest profile opening at the moment, looking for Mel Tucker’s replacement, Meyer’s name has naturally come up a handful of times.
Still, whether referring to Michigan State or otherwise, Meyer has maintained, on multiple occasions, that he is content with his life and not returning to coaching.
You can’t blame the different programs for asking and reaching out, though. Meyer, who is still under 60 years old, boasts 187 wins for an 85.4% winning percentage. He pairs that with a trio of national titles over his 17 seasons.
A spot at the desk for FOX Sports’ pregame show on Saturday is where Meyer currently resides. That’s where he’ll likely be staying too based on the latest denial from him when it comes to his availability or interest.

Report: Meyer denies link with Michigan State vacancy, happy in broadcasting
Urban Meyer is reportedly not a candidate for, nor is he interested in, the Michigan State head coaching job according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.
“About the ‘reports’ linking Urban Meyer to the Michigan State HC job…I just checked with him,” Feldman wrote on Twitter. “There is zero truth to it with him being a candidate for it. He has no interest in that and is happy with what he’s doing now at FOX Sports.”
Rumors were floating around that Meyer was open to taking the job at MSU. A big part of that is that the Spartans were interested in giving him a hefty amount.
However, the three-time national champion is set to remain at FOX Sports and has no interest in the gig, per Feldman.
He went 83-9 with the Buckeyes and won the 2014 national championship in the playoff’s first year. Meyer won two national titles at Florida (’06 and ’08) as well while going 65-15 with the Gators. He also previously coached at Bowling Green and Utah.
