USC‘s highly anticipated game against Michigan this weekend had a harrowing moment early in the matchup when Trojans’ sophomore wide receiver Makai Lemon went down with an injury. Blindsided on punt coverage by a Michigan player on a hit during the first quarter that many believed was an illegal hit and a missed call.

Lemon spent several moments on the turf before being helped off the field and eventually taken to a University of Michigan hospital for further evaluation. As USC head coach Lincoln Riley provided an update on his player Monday following the game.

“He’s doing good, he’s doing good, Riley repeated. “He’s rebounded back well, I think as good as you could possibly hope for with that scary of a situation.”

Riley didn’t speak on the potentially illegal nature of the hit, with Lemon running down on punt as a gunner with one player blocking him before another came from the middle of the field to deliver a hit. But Riley did reveal that the injury sustained by Lemon was to the head and neck area.

“Was kind of a unique play, head ended up — kind of the whiplash effect and I think it was more of the helmet hitting the ground than the actual hit I think that caused it,” Riley explained. “Obviously never want to see that, and thankfully bounced back well and was able to fly home with us at night and is doing very well.”

Lemon more than likely is going through concussion protocol given the area and nature of his injury. Making his timeline for a return to the field more obscure moving forward heading into USC’s matchup against Wisconsin this weekend.

The Los Alamitos native is expected to have an increased role in USC’s offense this season alongside several other young wideouts on the Trojans roster. Catching four passes for 45 yards this year, including his first career touchdown catch in Week 2 against Utah State. Hopefully making a safe and speedy return to the USC lineup this season.
