The College Football Playoff committee is getting a new look as new USC athletic director Jen Cohen is on the way out. She has decided to focus on her new role in Los Angeles after leaving Washington. A spot is open on the committee but the CFP was quick to fill it.

Utah athletic director Mark Harlan is the new committee member, the College Football Playoff announced on Monday evening. A Pac-12 (and future Big Ten) AD exits, while Harlan enters from the same conference — even if the Utes are bolting for the Big 12 ahead of the 2024 season.

“We are pleased to have Mark join the committee. His vast knowledge and experience as a college administrator has him well prepared for this new role,” CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said in a statement. “While we are sorry Jennifer has had to step down from the committee, we certainly understand the exciting and challenging responsibilities she has with her new position at USC.”

Harlan has been the Utah athletic director since 2018, previously being with USF. Outside of the Bulls, all of Harlan’s experience has come on the West Coast. Arizona, San Jose State, and UCLA are all FBS programs he has worked for in the past.

In his statement, Harlan thanked the College Football Playoff for giving him an opportunity to serve on the committee. He is ready to hit the ground running in a few weeks when rankings begin to be released.

“I’m honored to serve in this important role, and I’d like to thank the CFP management committee for this opportunity,” Harlan said. “I recognize the importance of this committee for college football and for our industry, and I’m eager to join the current committee members in this commitment for the 2023 season.”

Harlan will be a part of the final four-team College Football Playoff. Beginning next season, the field will expand to 12, giving us a new era in the sport. With conference realignment going on as well — something Harlan himself has been in the middle of — the 2023 CFP will be the last of its kind.

The Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl will play hosts to the semifinals, while NRG Stadium in Houston, TX will be the national championship site. Games will be played on Jan. 1 and Jan. 8, respectively. There is a ton of football left to be played, with the final CFP standings being announced on Sunday, Dec. 3.
