The Vanderbilt Commodores will hit the road for the first time this season as they face Georgia State in Atlanta. Looking to achieve their first 3-0 start to a year since the 2017 season ahead of the start of their SEC schedule.

Ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Panthers, Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea updated the injury status of several of his players. Starting with senior defensive lineman Khordae Sydnor, who missed the team’s Week 2 matchup against Alcorn State with an ankle injury.

“Khordae is getting better, I’m happy to say,” Lea said during his Tuesday press conference. “He’ll be questionable this week, but he’s been out there moving around and doing some doing some stuff. So he’s progressing probably faster than we had initially thought, which is exciting.”

Sydnor transferred to Vanderbilt this offseason after spending three seasons at Purdue. Recording one sack in Vandy’s Week 1, upset win over Virginia Tech before suffering an ankle injury in the second quarter. Playing through the pain and returning to the game before being ruled out of the Commodores’ second game of the season.

“And then Kolbey [Taylor] is back to practice today and thought had a good day working his way back. He should be available this weekend, so we’re excited to have both of those guys back,” Lea said.

The transfer cornerback also missed Week 2 for what was labeled as an ‘internal matter’, not seeing the field in the second half of Vanderbilt’s game against the Hokies as well. But his return to the Commodores’ defense alongside Sydnor this weekend would serve as major additions for the team.

“Other injuries, the longer-term guys. Brycen Coleman‘s on a path back, he’s starting to move around. Obviously, Mo [Maurice] Hampton‘s been out, that’s soft tissue related. He’s getting closer. CJ will be long term, CJ Williams and then as is Grayson [Morgan],” Lead added.

There’s no question that the Commodores looked promising in their Week 1 win versus an ACC team entering the season with high expectations. And a fully healthy roster can definitely take Vanderbilt a long way in continuing so surprise teams this season.

“It was cool today to see there’s little attendance in the pit, in the injury pit today. So feels like we’re a healthy team, obviously anytime you’re two games in going on three, there’s gonna be some bumps and bruises here. But on the whole, we’re getting guys back and that’s a that’s a good thing,” Lea concluded.
