Virginia Tech landed a commitment from Transfer Portal safety Isaiah Cash on Thursday.

The former Sam Houston State standout also considered Ole Miss.

“Having a position coach at VT who’s been in the NFL and knows what it takes to get there was a huge factor for me,” Cash said of Pierson Prioleau. “In my opinion their schedule is competitive especially starting out with two SEC schools. Their tradition and fanbase create an environment where I know I’d be challenged and could grow.”

As a transfer player, Cash was a three-star recruit, according to the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings. He is the 53rd-ranked safety and the 586th-ranked player nationally in this transfer cycle. Cash made the announcement on social media, writing, “This is home.”

Now entering his sixth season of college football, Cash has plenty of experience. That experience showed up last season with Sam Houston State. From the safety position, he was able to make 67 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss and 0.5 sacks. On top of that, he also had two interceptions and 12 passes defended for the season.

The 2024 season was a great one for Sam Houston State, winning 10 games, including the New Orleans Bowl. That was in the second season for the program at the FBS level. It also proved to be the last season of the K.C. Keeler era at Sam Houston State.

Now, Cash is on his way to a Virginia Tech team that’s coming off a 6-6 regular season and still has to play in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Hokies had a pass defense that ranked 61st in the country, giving up 214.3 yards per game. Then, the team’s scoring defense was ranked 44th in the country, giving up 22.8 points per game. As a unit, Virginia Tech forced 14 interceptions on the season.

Virginia Tech currently has the 37th-ranked transfer class in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 2025 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. It’s a class that has already seen 22 players exit the program through the portal while six transfers have committed to Colorado.
