During the 2023 season, Fitzgerald appeared in one game and made a tackle while redshirting. He helped the Hokies to a 6-6 record during the regular season this year.
Fitzgerald is joining a Vanderbilt team that also finished 6-6 during the regular season. The Commodores are set to face Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 27.
Prior to signing with Virginia Tech out of high school, Fitzgerald attended Nolensville High in Tennessee. He was ranked as a three-star recruit and the No. 67 receiver in the country coming out of high school, per the On3 Industry Rankings.
He originally chose the Hokies over offers from Michigan, Oklahoma, Auburn and others. Fitzgerald holds several school records at his high school, including most receptions in a season (88) and in a career (198), most receiving yards in a season (1,348) and in a career (2,673) and most receiving touchdowns in a season (18) and in a career (36).

Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia granted eligibility for 2025 season
It appears as though Chance Fitzgerald will be catching passes from Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia next season after a preliminary injunction has been granted in the U.S. District Court of Middle Tennessee, arguing that the governing body’s redshirt rule involving junior college eligibility violates antitrust law.
The ruling will allow Vanderbilt’s star quarterback to return for another season. The NCAA will be able to challenge the court’s injunction, but for now, he will be able to play next season.
Pavia had a great season for Vanderbilt in 2024. He has thrown for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns, with four interceptions. He’s also rushed for 716 yards and six scores.
