It took less than two minutes for controversy to strike in the College Football Playoff national championship.

Georgia defensive lineman Jordan Davis appeared to force a fumble and sack Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, which Nakobe Dean ran back for a touchdown. But after a review, Young’s hand was going forward, meaning it was an incomplete pass.

So instead of a 6-0 Bulldogs lead, Alabama had 2nd and 10 from its own 44-yard line. The Crimson Tide ended up settling for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

It would’ve been quite a way for Georgia to get momentum to start the game. The Bulldogs won the coin toss and elected to defer, giving Young and the potent Crimson Tide offense the ball first.

The CFP national championship between Georgia and Alabama just getting started on ESPN. It’s a rematch of last month’s SEC Championship — a 41-24 Crimson Tide victory.

ESPN shares mind-blowing stat on Alabama when facing Georgia

If you are a fan of Alabama football and statistical omens, then you’re in luck. There’s plenty of both in favor of the Crimson Tide in tonight’s national championship game.

ESPN found that in Alabama’s last 95 games played, there have only been two separate occasions in which the Crimson Tide have been underdogs under Nick Saban. Their opponent in those games?

Georgia.

But the main part of that stat, which should have Alabama fans preparing for their seventh national championship under Saban, is the outcomes of those two games. The Crimson Tide and their head coach won those games by an average score of 22.5 points.

It’s one thing to come out on top in a game that you are the underdog in, but it is terrifying for the other team if you have done so, on average, by more than three touchdowns.
