WATCH: Deion Sanders breaks down recruiting pitch at Jackson State
Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders joined the Dan Patrick Show Thursday morning discussed his advantages when in comes to recruiting and how his pitch is different than the average coach.
“I’m going to pretty much allow you to understand that I’ve sat on three sides of the table,” Sanders said. “I’m in the living room like you, I’m the parent, and I’ve been the kid. Now I’m the coach. That’s a heck of an advantage because I know the thought processes of everyone provided in this room.”
Sanders has different pitches ready for different aspects of the recruits influencers. Whether it be the 7-on-7 coach, head coach, mother, father, whoever — Sanders remains brutally honest. He’s not promising NIL deals, he’s praying that his kids get to the NFL, and he’s going to give these recruits an opportunity to make sure they have a place to sleep, provide three meals a day, but “everything else is on you,” Sanders said.
The obvious example is five-star blue chip prospect Travis Hunter flipping from Florida State, and choosing instead to pave the way for future top recruits to go the FCS and HBCU route in the age of name, image and likeness. On top of Sanders recruiting pitch, Hunter also got to see the culture at Jackson State first hand.

“One of the reasons that we got Travis Hunter is, he came here during homecoming,” Sanders said. “That’s the last place you want to let an African American kid come to a HBCU homecoming when we had almost 60,000 on hand. The culture of the band, and we won and we were dominant. He’s in there listening to my pregame speech and at the conclusion of the speech of I’m saying like, ‘give me my theme music’ and ‘My Hitta, My Hitta’ comes on and everybody there is dancing and rockin’ because that’s who we are.”
Obviously Jackson State is the most attractive place to come play if you’re a Division I prospect looking to jump to an HBCU for the sole reason that not only does Sanders, one of the greatest NFL players of all time, coach the team — the national spotlight is on you. Two or three times a year Jackson State plays their games on ESPN and the nation has taken notice. Add in the fact that the culture in unparalleled to any other HBCU in the nation, what’s there not to like if you’re a parent, coach ore recruit looking to join the Tigers’ football program?
“I’m going to promise you that if you send me a boy I’m going to send you back a man,” Sanders said.
