In the 24-plus hours since Auburn fired now-former football coach Bryan Harsin on Monday, a number of names have been bandied about as potential candidates to take over on the The Plains. Among them: Current Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders.
The former Florida State, NFL and MLB star has taken the JSU Tigers — playing in the FCS and SWAC conference — to new modern day heights. On Tuesday, he was asked about potentially being a candidate at Auburn and brushed it off in a way that maybe only Sanders could pull off.
“Yeah I’ve heard from the Tigers — Jackson State Tigers,” Sanders said in a clip via Thee Pre Game Show.
“I’m talking about Auburn,” said the reporter who asked the original question.
“Oh, I thought you meant Jackson State, my bad. Fraudulent slip,” Sanders said.

Don’t let Sanders seemingly mixing up “Freudian” and “fraudulent” distract you from his artful use of both schools being the Tigers to move quickly back to speaking about his current job.
The reporter had originally said “Auburn” but then asked if Sanders had heard from “the Tigers.” That was what got the first answer from Sanders before the reporter clarified.

However, on a 60 Minutes segment in October, Sanders said that if an FBS school — particularly a Power 5 — came and offered a job or was making him a candidate, he would seriously entertain such offers of discussions.
“Yes, I’m going to have to entertain it. Straight up. I would be a fool not to,” Sanders said in the segment. Part of his motivation to do as much is to help get his assistants a pay bump, too — he did rule out coaching the the NFL, though.
But for now, at least, Sanders is staying put and will be coaching the Tigers — the Jackson State Tigers, that is.
