Hansel Emmanuel Donato Dominguez stood out from the crowd at the City of Palms Classic over the weekend. The one-armed basketball player put on a show, proving that passion outweighs any perceived obstacles a person has.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Dominguez moved to the United States to play on scholarship at prep school Life Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Florida. His father, Hansel Salvador Donato, is a former Dominican professional basketball player.
Life Christian won its first game of the City of Palms Classic by a score of 65-59 against Choctawhatchee High School. Dominguez finished the game with 16 points (6-15 FG), four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
When Hansel Emmanuel Donato Dominguez was just six, a wall collapsed on his left arm, trapping him for nearly two hours. Though he was eventually rescued, the damage done to his arm was too severe, and he had to have it amputated.
Although the news was devastating to his family, Dominguez didn’t let it stop him. He picked up a love for the game from watching his father and quickly began to develop his skills. Now 17 and standing at 6-foot-5, he has his eyes on the next level.

Dominguez hadn’t received any Division I scholarship offers at the beginning of the school year, but that would soon change. In August, Tennessee State became the first school to take a chance on him.
In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Dominguez said he hopes people do “not see me as a special kid who has a disability. [I wish] that they only see me as a great player who will go as far as many. That I am a good player.”
Based on his performance, it seems he is well on his way to achieving that goal. With a good chance to play college hoops, this could be just the beginning of the Hansel Emmanuel Donato Dominguez story.
Life Christian Academy is next set to play at 3:30 p.m. ET on Monday against Tampa Catholic High School.
