EUGENE, OR - OCTOBER 22: Oregon Ducks running back Bucky Irving (0) steps out of bound in front of the UCLA bench on a run during the first half of a college football game between the Oregon Ducks and UCLA Bruins on October 22, 2022 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR (Photo by Steve Conner/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Oregon is laying a beatdown on UCLA in Eugene and it’s understandable that the Bruins are not going to be too cheery about things. But shoving another player after the play — especially when you were on the sideline for that play — is still crossing the line.

Now, Oregon linebacker Justin Flowe — the Duck in question who gets pushed to the ground — is certainly guilty of a fair bit of embellishment. The arms flailing and head shaking certainly add a nice touch, and stuck out to the refs.

For his efforts, linebacker Kain Medrano, the UCLA player who appeared to shove Flowe, got tagged for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty.

While a move like that might be just fine when shedding a block or taking down a ball carrier, you can’t try to toss opposing linebackers off your teammates — even if it’s not as violent of a situations as Flowe’s theatrics would lead one to believe.

It was a rough day for UCLA all around

After a 49-yard Bo Nix rainbow to Troy Franklin put Oregon on top of UCLA, 17-10, in a Top 10 showdown, Ducks head coach Dan Lanning decided to go for another body blow.

Lined up for the ensuing kickoff with just more than 10 minutes to go before halftime, Lanning dialed up the onside and junior kicker Andrew Boyle executed it perfectly — from the soft tap to get the ball rolling to recovering it himself.

Oregon cashed in a touchdown shortly after to make it a two-touchdown lead over the Bruins with 6:34 until the half.

The onside is reminiscent of a self-recovered onside that then-Colts kicker Pat McAfee pulled off a number of years ago. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that McAfee was on campus at Oregon today for ESPN’s College GameDay.
