West Virginia is using any justification as to why they should have been in the NCAA Tournament. That includes a near upset today by a team the Mountaineers beat handily in the regular season.

Chester Frazier, an assistant on this past staff at WVU, tweeted out a photo of their final score from the first game of their season in a 28-point win over Robert Morris. That’s after the Colonials gave a scare to No. 2 Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday – which was why he went with the facepalm emoji.

This comes after West Virginia (19-13) was the First Team Out of the field last weekend on Selection Sunday. Most of their frustration to this point had been aimed at North Carolina, who was the Last Team In and will make play in the bracket later today after advancing in the First Four. However, it seems the Mountaineers will be taking note of everything with any team in making their case that they should have been in.

Frazier was the associate head coach under Darian DeVries this season in Morgantown after making three other stops as an assistant at power programs since 2010. There’s not yet been word on where he’ll be coaching next season, though, with DeVries’ move to Indiana this week.

West Virginia had five wins over teams that eventually made this field. That leaves a few more chances for the Mountaineers, including Frazier, to find further proof that they should’ve participated in March Madness.

Alabama survives scare from Robert Morris, advances to second round

No. 2 Alabama survived a scare against No. 15 Robert Morris on Saturday, beating the Colonials in a 90-81 battle to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Late in the game, though, the Tide rode the delayed return of Grant Nelson to avoid the upset. Nelson, who was questionable with a sprained ankle but cleared just before tip, entered the game for the first time with 8:32 remaining after asking to check himself in with the Colonials cutting the Tide’s lead to two. He immediately provided Alabama a boost, including a dunk to retake the lead after Robert Morris took its first lead of the game half a minute earlier. The finish began an 11-1 run for Tide run over the next three and a half minutes as Alabama never looked back.

Mark Sears posted a double-double with a team-high 22 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. He led three players in double-digit scoring for ‘Bama on Friday along with Cliff Omoruyi (17 points, 100% FG) while Mouhamed Dioubate had a double-double off the bench with 18 points and 10 rebounds. As for the Colonials, Robert Morris’ effort was spurred by 25 points, a game-high, from Amarion Dickerson.
