West Virginia needed a great season to justify keeping Brown around in Morgantown. They most certainly got that with what was by far his best season yet. After going 22-25 in his first four seasons, the Mountaineers posted an 8-4 record in 2023.
They did so behind a Top-50 offense that put up over 31 points per game. The run game was key to that success as QB Garrett Greene as well as RBs CJ Donaldson Jr. and Jaheim White each rushed for over 700 yards and combined to score 27 touchdowns.
After starting 4-1, West Virginia did slide a bit with a 2-5 stretch over the course of the month. Still, they were able to close it out on a high note with wins over Cincinnati and Baylor. That helped them finish with their most wins since their final year under Dana Holgorsen.

As for North Carolina, they went 8-4 as well to post their third season with at least eight wins in the past four years. However, they broke down by the time that late October came around.
After a 6-0 start that put them in the playoff hunt, the Tar Heels went on to lose four of their final six.
The likely reason that UNC finds themselves as an underdog is the current unknown status of QB Drake Maye. Maye threw for over 3,600 yards and 24 touchdowns in his second season as the team’s starter. As a highly-projected pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, though, he could elect to hold out and not play in the bowl game.
Depending on who you are, the idea of being showered in mayonnaise is a fairly foul thought. Still, it’s going to be the outcome for one of these two coaches after West Virginia and North Carolina take the field inside Bank of America Stadium later this month.
