Virginia Tech has made a splash in the NCAA transfer portal on Saturday evening. Former West Virginia forward Amani Hansberry will continue his career with the Hokies, he announced via X.

This was Hansberry’s second time going through the portal process. His playing days began in the Big Ten with Illinois, signing with the Illini out of high school. But after one season under Brad Underwood, Hansberry decided to look for greener pastures.

Darian DeVries was able to bring Hansberry to Morgantown. The results were great, finding one of the Big 12’s more consistent players. Hansberry averaged 9.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 42.9% from the field. West Virginia could count on him from the line too, making 75% of his free throw attempts.

“It shows up in my passion and how hard I play,” Hansberry, who stands at 6-8, said of his game. “You have to have passion. It’s not about the size of the dog, but the size of the dog’s heart. That was instilled in me at an early age. My dad always said to me if you are going to do anything you have to do it with all your will and put your best foot forward. I try to do that, not only in basketball but in outside life. That’s my main focus.”

Virginia Tech is now the third stop of his career, potentially looking to be the final destination. Head coach Mike Young will be getting a hard worker and somebody who is proven at the power conference level. A nice pickup for the Hokies, especially this early in the transfer portal cycle.

Virginia Tech loses guard to NCAA transfer portal

Virginia Tech guard Brandon Rechsteiner has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He spent two seasons with the Hokies.

Rechsteiner made 32 appearances for Virginia Tech this season and 15 starts. He averaged 7.0 points, 1.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 36.5% from the field and 29.9% from beyond the arc.

In his true freshman season, Rechsteiner played in 26 games and started twice. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged just 1.8 points in 9.1 minutes per game.

Rechsteiner had arguably his best performance this season in Virginia Tech’s season finale. In the Hokies’ 82-73 loss to California in double overtime, Rechsteiner tied his career-high of 19 points while shooting 6-14 from the floor.
