South Florida is trying to piece together their new coaching staff under Mitch Hannahs. And on Saturday afternoon, the Bulls made a splash. According to d1baseball.com’s Kendall Rogers, Western Michigan’s Daniel Schlereth will become their pitching coach. And former South Carolina assistant Joey Holcomb will also join the USF staff. Chris Cates is also being retained for the Bulls.

Holcomb will look to turnaround the USF program, as they only went 26-29 overall and 11-16 in conference play in the 2024 campaign.

He joined the Gamecocks coaching staff in July of 2023. He coached the outfielders in 2024, as well as Ethan Petry. Petry blasted 20-plus home runs for the second straight year along with 53 RBIs, 51 walks, and 57 runs scored. He also coached Blake Jackson, who had nine doubles, five home runs, and a team-high 16 stolen bases in 2024. Holcomb was a critical part of coaching a South Carolina offense that hit 101 home runs, stole 66 bases, and scored 461 runs.

Before joining South Carolina, Holcomb spent two seasons at Campbell University (Buies Creek, North Carolina). In 2023, he helped to guide the Camels to a Big South regular-season and tournament championship. They also made a championship game appearance in the NCAA Columbia Regional, finishing 46-15 overall and 22-5 in conference play.

In 2023, the Camels hit .318 as a team, ranking them ninth in the nation in that stat category. They also led the country in on-base percentage (.439) and hit-by-pitches (146). Campbell also ranked seventh in the nation in home runs (123). In his first year with Campbell in 2022, the Camels blasted 118 home runs, setting a new program record.

Before joining Campbell, Holcomb spent two years with the NC State Wolfpack. He helped them reach the 2021 College World Series semifinals. While he was there, he served as their assistant offensive coach and worked with their catchers and outfielders. Holcomb worked with eight MLB draft picks and the 2020 Johnny Bench Award winner, the nation’s top catcher.

Before joining NC State, he spent seven seasons with the UNC Greensboro staff as their assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. In Greensboro, he helped coach their 16 MLB Draft picks, eight All-Americans, and 38 all-conference players.
