Why Oregon’s offense will look similar from Bo Nix to Dillon Gabriel
Yet again Oregon will rely on a transfer quarterback to lead their team into battle this season. As Dillon Gabriel will start under center this year for the Ducks and replace the big shoes left behind by Bo Nix. Who plastered his name all over the program’s record books in the last two seasons and led Oregon to a 22–5 record as a starter.
But even though Nix set the standard sky high at the quarterback position at Oregon, Scoop Duck‘s Justin Hopkins believes Gabriel has the chance to pick up right where he left off.
“First and foremost, he brings experience, right?” Hopkins asked at the On3 Roundtable. “I mean you talk about a guy who’s played college football for five years now at various programs around the country. UCF, Oklahoma, so that experience is ultimately invaluable and you’re talking about a guy who’s been productive.”
“It’s not like a guy who’s kind of worked up the chain and finally found a place he could start. I think he’s found a place where he feels like he can excel.”

Gabriel joins Oregon as the most experienced quarterback in college football with a whopping 49 career starts under his belt along with 14,865 career passing yards and 125 touchdowns. Numbers that he has a likelihood to keep adding to given the quarterback friendliness of offensive coordinator Will Stein‘s offense in Eugene.

“One of the things that this Oregon offense does really well, and did really well under Bo Nix, was just be efficient. And Nix almost got unfairly labeled as just kind of a dink and dunk guy, but ultimately that’s a big proponent of this offense,” Hopkins explained.
“Will Stein, his mantra is feed the studs. That’s what he says and he’s got playmakers all around. You got Tez Johnson, you got running backs, you got Terrance Ferguson at tight end, all these guys were productive last year and they’re back.”
There’s no doubt that Gabriel will be surrounded by arguably the most talented set of weapons of his entire career. A cast of characters that when paired with Oregon’s strength up front and on defense could set the Ducks up for success not just in the Big Ten, but in the College Football Playoff this season as well.
“So if you’re Dylan Gabriel, you don’t have to be the guy. You really just have to get that ball out and let those guys do the work and so I think you’ll see a lot of similarities between Dylan Gabriel this year and Bo Nix last year. And I think that’s really just going to be a byproduct of the offense and what Oregon wants to do,” Hopkins concluded.
