The Crimson Collective launched in April 2023 with Matt Garff as the founder, Colorado Rockies owner and 1982 Utah graduate Charlie Monfort as the board chair, and a slew of notable Ute alums as part of the board of directors. In June of 2023, the collective brought on Executive Director Kyle Brennan, who worked formerly as Utah's deputy athletics director. He also served as the athletic director at Illinois State. There are other collectives in the Utah marketplace, but Garff says The Crimson Collective is different. He says that largely because it has key backers behind it, most notability Monfort and former Utah football stars like Eric Weddle, Kevin Dyson and Alex Smith on its board. But the collective also has the support and endorsement of the University of Utah and its athletic department. “I started looking into this because I could see the need for it as far back as a year and a half ago,” Garff told The Salt Lake Tribune. “It’s continuing to evolve and continuing to grow, and that’s how the best ideas come to fruition, they’re always the evolution of the idea.” While football appears to be the initial focus of the collective, basketball players – both men and women – and members of the gymnastics team were displayed on The Crimson Collective’s website.
