J.J. McCarthy is making sure to capitalize on his NIL when he can.

The Michigan quarterback will make his first start in the College Football Playoff on Saturday against TCU. But first, he’s inked an NIL deal with Bose.

McCarthy announced the deal on Instagram in a short video, promoting the brand’s QuietComfort Earbuds. Valiant Management facilitated the deal.

It’s a no brainer for the audio equipment company, agreeing to terms on a deal with the sophomore. Michigan is positioned to make a run at the national title these next two weeks. Plus, McCarthy will be back in Ann Arbor for at least another season.

Bose has only ramped up its NIL operation the last 16 months. Just this week, it signed Oregon quarterback Bo Nix. The two quarterbacks join a growing list of names, including UConn’s Paige Bueckers, Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt and South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston.

McCarthy beat out Cade McNamara for the starting job earlier this season, leading the Wolverines to their second consecutive Big Ten title. And now they’re back in the playoffs, looking to get past the semifinals. He’s thrown for 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions, with a 65.3% completion percentage.

Finding NIL opportunities has not been an issue, either, signing notable deals with Dunkin’, Eberg Capital and The M Den.

J.J. McCarthy’s On3 NIL Valuation

The Michigan quarterback holds a $678,000 On3 NIL Valuation. He’s seen a $133K growth over the past 10 weeks, thanks in part performance against Ohio State. In The Game, he threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns with another rushing touchdown.

His evaluation ranks No. 53 in the On3 NIL 100, which is the first of its kind and defacto NIL ranking of the top 100 high school and college athletes ranked by their On3 NIL Valuation. The valuation also ranks No. 31 in college football.

For all his on-field success this year, J.J. McCarthy has also built up a strong social media profile with more than 232,000 followers.

The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets the standard market NIL value for high school and college athletes. A proprietary algorithm, the On3 NIL Valuation calculates an athlete’s NIL value using dynamic data points targeting three primary categories: performance, influence and exposure.

About On3 NIL Valuation, Brand Value, Roster Value

While the algorithm includes deal data, it does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals athletes have completed to date, nor does it set an athlete’s NIL valuation for their entire career.

The On3 NIL Valuation accounts for an athlete’s roster value and brand value. Roster value is the value an athlete has by being a member of his or her team at his or her school, which factors into the role of NIL collectives. Brand value factors in an athlete’s personal brand and the value it could bring to regional and national brands outside of the scope of NIL collectives.
