Eli Ricks made a significant impact including the first possession of the game

“The difference here is the front … Bama is utilizing on the first snap a three man front … not “rabbits”, however, only Will Anderson is an OLB upfront. He is with two Def Tackles upfront (47, 50) but the twist here is that Dallas Turner is lined up as an off ball linebacker, perhaps where you would normally see Deontae Lawson. (Lawson was out with injury) Turner is going to rush the passer primarily from this position and may sometimes drop …. but this is a twist. UA used this formation a bit in the Spring but this was the unveiling of it in the regular season.

On State’s first play, they go right after new starter Eli Ricks which is not a brilliant plan. Ricks would break up a thousand passes in this game. The very first snap of the game was his first. More are coming.

On the first third down of the game, the Tide goes full Cheetah package. 31 and 15 are the outside rushers with 41 lined up inside like a tackle.”

Alabama’s Heisman winner laughs off a roughing the passer call in the second quarter

“State was called for their first roughing on Bryce Young. It’s a HEINOUS, pathetic call. Bryce was literally laughing when he saw the laundry. This was clearly some level of ‘makeup call’ based on what happened in Knoxville but it’s just not right for MSU to pay that bill.

In fact, State then lines up offsides and then is guilty of targeting so on three successive plays, UA is gifted 35 yards in penalties. It’s Bizzaro World Knoxville.

Jahmyr Gibbs then scores on a well designed run play. State is actually heavy in the box on this snap but Gibbs is able to find a running lane because some pre snap motion by UA has moved a couple of defenders. This was a well designed run. Good stuff. Well blocked too from the big uglies upfront.

14-0 Bama, 11:30 remains in the first half.”

The Mississippi State secondary plays well at the start of the second half

“The next series of downs included a deep shot to (Jermaine) Burton. He was well covered and the ball was slightly overthrown but the State nickel corner was running stride for stride with Jermaine. On the third down play that lead to an Alabama punt, State is showing one look (a certain blitz) and then jumps into another look (some guys surprisingly drop, others blitz) but still are only bringing 4 with 7 in coverage. Bryce again can’t find an open receiver and throws an incompletion to a covered up Latu.

Credit (Zach) Arnett, the outstanding State DC (Defensive Coordinator). I think they did a few things that caused us issues but the primary one … showing one look pre-snap but that was NOT the look upon the snap of the ball.

Bama punts but up 24-0.”

Defense gives up its first points of the game on the final possession

“On 4th and 5 Bama does employ Cheetah but (Will) Rogers gets off a pass to an open receiver who has shaken …. Jahquez Robinson.

State gets to ANOTHER fourth down. Now it’s 4th and 10. Just make one more play here guys and they don’t score ….. Kool Aid gives up the reception. Ugh. Then, another.

He hasn’t given up much all day but he may be out of gas here. Henry (To’oto’o) gets outrun on a throw outside …. you can tell the Tide wants to preserve this shut out but this was a long drive at the end of a 60 minute game. The want-to is there but the defense probably played it’s worst ball on this drive. The only real backup on this drive was 23 and State found him a couple of times.”
