Clemson WR Justyn Ross out for Wake Forest

Clemson star wideout Justyn Ross will miss Saturday’s game against Wake Forest, Dabo Swinney announced during his press conference Tuesday morning.

Justyn Ross was injured during the first quarter of last week’s game against UConn.

He has been playing through a stress fracture in his foot all season, which he further injured against UConn. Ross returned to the sideline during the game with crutches and a boot on his foot. Ross will likely have surgery this week.

“Justyn’s out. Probably going to go ahead and do surgery Thursday. Let me just say this about Justyn – It’s just who he is. Right before we played Georgia, I know there were a lot of rumors saying he broke his foot or whatever. And he didn’t break his foot. He had a very, very, very slight hairline area near his fifth metatarsal,” Swinney said.

“When I first heard that I was like, ‘Oh man, that’s not good. He’s going to be out four to five weeks.’ … But he was like, ‘I think I can play.’ And the doctors felt like he could play, or at least try. He hurt the Georgia game and the South Carolina State game. He’s been treating it all year, and he’s had no problems. It was amazing that he was able to go play 10 games.”

Swinney said one of the worst coaching days of his career was when he learned of the spinal issue Justyn Ross had prior to the 2020 season. He added that one of the best days of his career was watching Ross play against Georgia and for 10 games this season.

“His commitment to this team, his commitment to this university and this program, it’s been amazing to watch,” Swinney said. If that’s his last play, I’m thankful that he’s able to come back and play and play 10 games and show everybody what he can do and get his confidence where it needs to be. We’ll get him well and go from there.”

Justyn Ross leads Clemson with 46 receptions for 514 yards and three touchdowns. His 46 receptions are twice as many as anyone else on the roster. With Ross out, Clemson will start sophomore EJ Williams and freshmen Beaux Collins and Dacari Collins at receiver.

Clemson is also down receivers Joseph Ngata and Frank Ladson.
