#2 Iowa Men's Wrestling takes down California Baptist in season opener

The Iowa Men’s Wrestling team had a new look to their lineup as the took the mat against California Baptist. There were some familiar faces with Drake Ayala, Brody Teske and Real Woods, but three transfers and two redshirt freshman were in the lineup. That did not stop the Hawkeyes from rolling to a 40-0 victory over the Lancers to begin the season. The newcomers, Victor Voinovich lll (Oklahoma State), Jared Franek (North Dakota State) and Michael Caliendo (North Dakota State) won their matches by a combined score of 33-8. After going 20-1, en route to an NCAA runner-up finish last season, Real Woods began is 2023 campaign with a 15-0 win.

The Hawkeyes are ranked second in the preseason NWCA Coaches Poll behind Penn State. They are ranked eighth in the country by Intermat.

Up Next, the Hawkeyes will host #20 Oregon State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on November 19th on BTN+. The Beavers defeated Queens College, Greensboro College and #25 North Carolina at the North Carolina Quad Duals in Chapel Hill, NC this weekend.
