Jay Johnson and LSU have added even more power to the 2025 roster, this time picking up Eddie Yamin IV from Dayton. Yamin has the ability to play first base and catcher at 6-foot-5 with a massive frame and comes off a season where he made the All-Conference Second Team in the A-10.

After a quiet freshman year, batting just .178 with five home runs in 107 at-bats, Yamin exploded onto the scene as a sophomore in 2024, batting .342 with 13 home runs, 14 doubles, 54 RBIs, 20 walks, and a .608 slugging percentage in 199 at-bats. He had 59 strikeouts, an issue that also plagued him as a freshman, but Yamin’s overall power and potential is incredibly enticing as he makes his way to LSU for the 2025 season.

With Jared Jones potentially on the way out to the MLB Draft, Yamin serves as important insurance at first base, while also giving the Tigers’ staff another option at the catcher position which is in flux after the slew of departures there. Jay Johnson has talked about being more intentional and adding more high-impact players from the portal and this addition checks those boxes.

“We have a lot of work to do to have the team we want to have,” Johnson said after the season. “It will have a lot of high impact. I’m not so worried about the numbers. That’s where my head is at in terms of building the roster moving forward and at a place like LSU you can do that. It’s really fluid right now.”

Yamin is a right-handed bat from West Sand Lake, New York and has quickly become one of the top names in the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining. Now, he comes to LSU to join one of the biggest brands in college baseball.

There are two windows for the Transfer Portal in college baseball. The more notable of the two opens in late May, while the NCAA Tournament is still underway, and will remain open for 45 total days. There is, however, another portal window in December that lasts 15 days.
