BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU second baseman Steven Milam on Monday was named SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office.

Milam, a product of Las Cruces, N.M., was LSU’s leading hitting in its series victory versus top-ranked Texas A&M, batting .444 (4-for-9) with two doubles, one RBI, two runs, two walks and a .545 on-base percentage.

He was 2-for-2 in the Game 1 win over the Aggies and provided a crucial RBI single in a four-run sixth inning that erased a 3-2 Texas A&M lead.

Milam doubled and later scored as part of a two-run rally in the eighth inning of Game 2, as LSU stretched a 4-3 lead to 6-3 in the eventual 6-4 victory.

Milam hit .400 for the entire week, which also included a win over Grambling State on Tuesday night.

Steven Milam quotes after Saturday’s win over Texas A&M

On getting this win…

“I don’t think we’ve had a great year as a team collectively and you just have to stay with it and get to the next pitch. That’s what we did all night long and we ended up with a win tonight. We’ve learned from past series that we just have to stick with it and it will go our way eventually and that’s what happened tonight.”

On his growth this year…

“I felt good and confident. Every at bat I learn something and once you start stacking those together, you can really start getting better.”

On having success vs. the No. 1 team in the country…

“I’ve always liked playing on the biggest stage in the biggest atmosphere and that’s why I came here,” Milam said. “I want to win a national championship here and you have to play every game at 100 percent and that’s how I’m going to continue to play. I’ll play my heart out and leave it all out there.”

On his defensive performances…

“It’s been trying to get that one extra step laterally and anticipating where the hitters hit. Our coaches do a good job aligning us and we have a pretty good idea of where the ball is going to be hit, so that’s been a big key for us lately.”
