Get used to this in the modern day of college football and the transfer portal: A player announcing his departure from a program where he’s not necessarily playing much of a role.

That was the case for Miami Hurricanes LB Gilbert Frierson today, as he shared the news on social media that his time as a Cane is over. A former starter, Frierson wasn’t getting playing time, but the Coconut Grove native is as big a Miami fan as you’ll find. And early in the season, even when he wasn’t playing much, it was Frierson you’d see in the middle of a throng of players excoriating them to give their utmost to win a game.

Frierson posted that, in part, “Being born and raised in Miami, my only dream was to be a Hurricane. I am so grateful for the opportunity to not only play for the University of Miami but also to earn my degree. To all at The U I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. … With that being said, my time at the University of Miami has come to an end. I will be entering the transfer portal Dec. 5th as a graduate student so I can continue pursuing my dreams. This was a difficult decision but one I had to make.”

Frierson arrived at Miami as a 4-star safety in the Class of 2018, but was quickly moved to Striker/linebacker.

As a redshirt freshman he started one game and had 15 tackles, two for loss, and in 2020 he was a starter and had 53 tackles, nine for loss and two sacks. As a redshirt sophomore last year he made three starts and ended with 41 tackles, 3.5 for losses and a sack.

But he never really stepped up in a new role at STAR under Kevin Steele. The position requires a player who can cover and also be a physical tackler. The job wound up going to Te’Cory Couch.

So now Frierson will enter the portal.

And it’s expected many more will follow, as the team (which is at the 85 scholarship limit) has only nine departing seniors and will need to make room for a recruiting class that already has 19 commitments.
