Former Oregon State sophomore tight end Jack Velling has committed to Michigan State, he announced via social media on Wednesday. Velling will arrive in East Lansing with two years of eligibility remaining. The Seattle native—who entered the transfer portal on Dec. 6—visited Michigan State over the weekend of Dec. 8.

Velling will follow former Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith and tight ends coach Brian Wozniak to Michigan State. Smith officially hired Wozniak as Michigan State’s new tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator on Dec. 7.

Velling, a four-star transfer, is the No. 5 tight end and the No. 53 overall prospect in the transfer portal, according to the 2024 On3 Transfer Portal Rankings.

Velling hauled in 29 passes for 438 yards and eight touchdowns during his sophomore campaign. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end collected 719 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 45 career receptions with the Beavers.

A former three-star high school prospect out of Seattle (Wash.) Prep School, Velling was the No. 813 overall recruit in the 2022 On3 Industry Rankings. He was also the No. 47 tight end and the No. 13 prospect from Washington in his class.

Michigan State starting tight ends Maliq Carr and Evan Morris both entered the NCAA transfer portal after it opened on Dec. 4. Carr was the second-leading receiver for the Spartans in 2023, tallying 30 receptions for 352 yards and three touchdowns.

The Spartans currently have five scholarship tight ends on their roster: freshman Brennan Parachek, redshirt freshmen Jack Nickel and Michael Masunas, junior Ademola Faleye and sixth-year senior Tyneil Hopper. Michigan State landed a commitment from 2024 three-star tight end Wyatt Hook on Dec. 12.
