Michigan State received a long awaited commitment in their 2023 class, filling the signal caller position with four-star Portland (OR) West Linn quarterback Sam Leavitt

Leavitt is ranked the No. 141 overall recruit, the No.1 recruit in Oregon, and the No. 10 overall quarterback in the 2023 class by On3. He has been committed to Washington State since early July. Leavitt led West Linn (OR) High to a 12-1 season and a 6A state championship.

“What made (MSU) the place was the coaching staff and the culture and the vibe they give off,” Leavitt told SpartanMag.com. ”The ultimate goal is to win a natty and that’s exactly what I’m trying to do.”

He announced that he would be flipping his commitment via social media. He decommitted from Washington State late Wednesday (Dec. 14) evening.

The four-star QB visited the Cougars for an official visit on Dec. 2-4, before receiving a Michigan State offered on Dec. 7. He was in East Lansing for an official visit just a day later. Washington State offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Eric Morris became the head coach of North Texas.

Michigan State had to outlast the late offer from Washington. The draw of staying in the Pacific Northwest was a factor but it was too late for the Huskies as the Spartans secured Leavitt’s commitment on the visit.

“I knew when I went on my visit, it just felt like home and I remember on the bus I told my dad that this was where I want to be,” Leavitt said.

Leavitt is the 13th high school commit in the Michigan State 2023 class, and the tenth four-star recruit according to the On3 Consensus. The Spartans received a commitment from 2023 three-star wide receiver Aziah Johnson yesterday afternoon. Michigan State also picked up three-star running back Jaelon Barbarin. The class now ranks No. 19 in the country by the On3 team rankings.

H.S. Scouting Summary

“Pure passer who looks like one of the top arm talents and playmakers in the deep 2023 quarterback cycle. Has a stout frame, measuring at 6-foot-2, 197 pounds with a 9.5-inch hand prior to his senior season. Also registers as a good athlete, running a 4.67 second 40-yard dash and 4.38 second short shuttle. A senior riser who turned in a fantastic final season after transferring high schools. Led his team to a state title, while completing 69.1 percent of his passes for over 3,000 yards (a stellar 12.6 yards per attempt) and 36 touchdowns against five interceptions. Pairs that accurate, efficient statistical profile with considerable arm talent. Makes eye-popping throws with regularity, including some of the best individual plays we’ve seen from a 2023 signal caller. Has outstanding natural passing mechanics with quick, fluid arm action. Generates considerable velocity on his throws to all levels. Can drive and layer the football from off-platform. Plays with natural field vision and throws receivers open. Looks to be a loose, coordinated athlete. Shows some playmaking ability with his feet, rushing for 713 yards and eight touchdowns, including a big game on the ground in the state championship game. Fares well against the pass rush and shows creativity both as a passer and runner. Has some football bloodlines as his father was a linebacker at BYU and his older brother, Dallin Leavitt, is a safety with the Green Bay Packers.”
