Former Michigan and longtime NFL receiver Jason Avant and former U-M offensive lineman Jack Miller are back with the program, this time in media. Avant will do sideline reporting for Wolverines football games this year, while Miller will handle pregame, halftime, and postgame analysis.

Avant replaces Doug Karsch, who moves from the sidelines to play by play to replace Jim Brandstatter (retired). Miller replaces former All-American tackle Jon Jansen, who is now Karsch’s color commentator. He replaces former All-American lineman Dan Dierdorf, who retired with Brandstatter.

Brian Boesch, the Michigan basketball play-by-play man, will continue to host the pregame and postgame shows.

Avant, one of Michigan’s top receivers of the last several decades, ranks fourth in program history with 169 career receptions and 10th with 2,247 career receiving yards. He notched at least one reception in 35 straight games, the third longest streak in U-M history.

The Philadelphia Eagles took the former Michigan receiver in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft (109th overall). Avant spent 11 seasons in the NFL (2006-13 with the Eagles) and finished his career with 346 receptions for 4,118 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Following his playing career, Avant found success in the business world before entering coaching. He was part of the Eagles’ staff in 2020 through the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship. Avant has recently held television and radio roles with NBC Sports Philadelphia and 97.5 the Fanatic as part of Eagles game day broadcasts.

Miller, meanwhile, played on the Michigan offensive line from 2011-14, appearing in 22 games with 16 starts at center. In his senior year, the Perrysburg, Ohio, native won the Hugh H. Rader Award given to the top Michigan offensive lineman. He works at Hylant Insurance Group, previously as a client executive and now as the Detroit Market President.

Miller has experience in radio, too, having been in the broadcast booth as part of the University of Toledo’s Football radio broadcast for three seasons (2019-21). He’s also been involved in Buckeye CableSystem television broadcasts in Ohio. He’ll now continue to hone his skills at Michigan as part of U-M’s new broadcast team.

Michigan opens the season Sept. 3 against Colorado State in Ann Arbor.
