The Michigan Wolverines community lost one of its own this week with the new that James Earl Jones, a prominent actor of stage and screen, passed away at the age of 93.

Coined “one of the greatest actors in American history,” Jones graduated from Michigan in 1955 and is one of the only actors to achieve EGOT status, winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award in his storied career.

Known as the voice of Darth Vader from Star Wars, Mufasa from The Lion King and several other iconic roles, he has had a role at Michigan football games over the last 10 years as the voice of the pre-game hype video at the Big House.

The transcription is as follows:

“This is the University of Michigan where we respect integrity and honor excellence. We are loyal Wolverines. Standing for Midwestern values, hard work, determination and an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. We are the best university in the world. Students athletes and professors achieving to the highest level. This is our legacy and our future. We are proud members of the BIG Ten Conference in pursuit of national championships. We have won more games than anyone in the country. No one has won more. We believe in football… championship football. We shy away from no challenge or opponent. We bow to no man. We bow to no program. We are Michigan.”

Michigan quote of the day

“Everybody looks at the quarterback and says, ‘he didn’t do this, he didn’t do that. We have to be route detailed up as a whole unit to make sure it’s efficient. The fumble [before halftime] is something Colston [Loveland] has never done. He’s been in here beating himself up, but he’s a very good player and he’ll fix that mistake … but you can’t have three turnovers against a very good team… When you go 3 for 12 on third down, you’re not going to have a lot of explosive plays. We’ve got to not turn the ball over, and that will create explosive plays.”
