Lamar Morgan & Steve Casula presser takeaways & RAPID FIRE Michigan football position battles

The Michigan Wolverines are heading into their final week of fall camp before game week kicks in a week from Monday. There is still plenty to sort out in several position groups, but we got some clarity on where things stand in a few areas.

Position coaches Lamar Morgan (defensive backs) and Steve Casula (tight ends) spoke to the media over the weekend and discussed the battles at their respective spots. Among the takeaways were the ideas that sophomore Jyaire Hill is all but locked in as the team’s No. 2 cornerback.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discussed the battles and how it could affect what Michigan looks like in the season opener in less than two weeks.

“It hasn’t really changed [at No. 2 cornerback],” Sayfie said. “And I think it’s also encouraging that. considering Hill posted a TikTok last week where he was wearing a sling on his arm. A lot of fans obviously we’re concerned, and rightfully so. But good news heading into the opener is that that does not appear to be serious at all.

“It was kind of a theme with Lamar Morgan where he just kept coming back to this sentiment that it’s really hard to get up to speed if you’re a transfer with this Michigan defense with the way Michigan plays and practices and meetings and the schedule they have, the demands of being a Michigan football player. So it’s not that the four transfers they brought in the defensive backfield won’t play a lot, but it seems like the edge in nearly every situation goes to the guys who are coming back. Hill at corner, Quinten Johnson, Makari Paige at safety, and the other guys will have a role. I do feel like they have some pretty good depth here.

Maybe not that total star at safety, but you have a star at corner and then potentially a star at nickel if, if Zeke Berry or Ja’Den McBurrows become that. But you do have more depth than you did certainly in spring ball with what they brought in the portal and those guys will get up to speed as the year goes on.

“So at least for now, it seems like the guys who are coming back have the edge and then It’ll evolve as the year goes on, I’m sure.”
