The Wolverine Recaps Balas' Interview With Dusty May & Takes A Pulse Check Of The Wolverine's Roster

Spring camp and the NFL Draft have come and gone for the Michigan Wolverines will the full attention now turning to the summer and leading up to the 2024 season. U-M is out to defend its national title and will do so with plenty of new faces and a new head coach in Sherrone Moore.

Michigan will likely add more pieces to augment the roster and round things out ahead of the season. TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discussed the state of the roster during their Monday show.

Balas summed up his thoughts on where things stand with the squad.

“I feel good about the starting depth on defense,” he said. “Offense, obviously there are going to be some question marks. Seems like they’re thin at wide receiver. Offensive line, I think it’s going to be pretty good. I feel good about the pieces there and the two guys that barely played. I think when they get those five guys there [and healthy], they’re going to be pretty good and have a little bit of depth there. I still think they need a corner or two. I still think they need safety, which they’re looking for, and then a couple of linebackers.

“But those first-team guys, I think are fantastic. Now, when we look at the other side of the ball, I’m concerned about the quarterback. I don’t know that you’ve got a championship quarterback on this roster just because I don’t think you have the talent surrounding them maybe that you need. I said that about 2016 and there wasn’t, I don’t know that there was elite talent on the 2016 offense and they still moved the ball with Wilton Speight. I think there are better position players at some of those spots. So maybe it’s possible that the defense leads the way here in this offense does better than we think, but I’d feel much better if they had a quarterback in place.””

Other topics discussed during this week’s episode included what we would love to hear about Michigan football this summer, Balas’ 1-on-1 with head men’s basketball coach Dusty May and how quickly the roster came together, fan questions and much more.
