NC State softball earned its second ranked win of the season with a 4-0 victory over No. 22/23 South Carolina on Sunday afternoon in the last game of the Garnet & Black Invitational in Columbia, S.C., capping a 3-1 weekend.

The Pack (18-9, 3-5 ACC) took advantage of a trio of walks in the first inning as Michele Tarpey logged a sacrifice fly to put NC State on the board. The red and white then broke the game open with a three-run seventh inning, headlined by Tarpey’s two-RBI single.

The Wolfpack logged just five hits in the contest, but it drew five walks to add base runners. Tarpey finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a strikeout. Makayla Marbury was the only NC State player to record multiple runs scored, while she logged a walk.

Pitcher Madison Inscoe starred for the Wolfpack. She logged NC State’s only multi-hit contest with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. She also tossed a complete game shutout with just two hits allowed and one strikeout on just 96 pitches. She did not log a walk, wild pitch or hit by pitch in the game.

The shutout was the Wolfpack’s third of the season. It completed a successful weekend in South Carolina’s state capital. NC State also earned wins over Northwestern (1-0, Friday) and Michigan State (3-1, Saturday). The red and white was run-ruled in its second game Saturday in a 14-4 loss to Minnesota in five innings.
