Nebraska punter Brian Buschini to honor Brook Berringer by wearing No. 18
Punter Brian Buschini is going to bring something new to Nebraska’s special teams unit. While he has only been with the program for a year, he already appreciates the storied history.
Buschini announced on Monday that he will wear No. 18 for the season. It’s all to honor the legendary Brook Berringer, who played for Nebraska under head coach Tom Osborne. The story of Berringer is a “special” one according to the punter.
“Husker fans! I have switched my number to 18 to honor Brook Berringer! He was a fantastic player but was most importantly a follower of Jesus Christ! His story is special to me and I consider it an honor to wear his number! GBR,” Buschini said.
Berringer is one of the most famous quarterbacks in the history of Nebraska football, playing hero during the 1994 season. After Tommy Frazier went down with an injury, he help guide the Huskers throughout the rest of the regular season. Even when Frazier returned for the Orange Bowl against Miami, Berringer got playing time in the win.
In seven starts, Berringer threw for 1,295 yards, 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He also threw a touchdown during the Orange Bowl, contributing to the 24-17 win.

Nebraska was crowned national champions — the first of three within a four year stretch. Without the play of Berringer, Osborne may have not gotten the run started in Lincoln.
Berringer was ready to make a jump to the NFL after the 1995 season despite spending most of his time with Nebraska as a backup. Tragedy struck just two days before the draft though, as Berringer dies in a plane crash. A few different remembrances have been put in place, including a statue alongside Osborne in front of Memorial Stadium.
Now, Buschini will be the one to honor the legendary quarterback. Two players wore No. 18 for Nebraska a season ago in with defensive back Jaeden Gould and quarterback Matt Masker. Neither are listed on the 2023 roster, leaving the door open for Buschini.
