On Tuesday, two days before Irish football spring practice kicks off on March 17, Notre Dame has announced the time for the annual Blue-Gold Game. The scrimmage will air on April 23 at 1 p.m. ET exclusively on Peacock, NBC’s streaming service.

Ticket information is available here.

There won’t be a shortage of sporting events taking place on Notre Dame’s campus that weekend, either. The men’s lacrosse team gets the weekend started early against North Carolina on April 21, while the current No. 1-ranked Irish baseball team hosts a three-game series with Wake Forest from April 22-24.

Storylines to watch on April 23

This year’s spring game will be Marcus Freeman’s first as the Irish’s head coach, but most of the attention will likely divert to the offense. Playing in his second Blue-Gold Game, rising sophomore Tyler Buchner will battle junior Drew Pyne in the public eye as the two compete for the 2022 starting quarterback job. The competition for No. 1 signal-caller is undoubtedly the biggest position group storyline this spring.

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will be working with new assistants across the board on his side of the ball: running backs coach Deland McCullough, offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey and tight ends coach Gerad Parker. McCullough, Hiestand and Parker will look to continue the success of their predecessors, including Hiestand himself since this is his second stint as the offensive line coach.

Stuckey, on the other hand, is looking to revamp an Irish receiver room which has underperformed in recent seasons. He will do so with an undermanned receiver room.

It will also be the first public look at new defensive coordinator Al Golden’s scheme and plans for the defense, although he is likely to be taking pages out of Freeman’s book with the group. Defensive line coach Al Washington is the other new face on the defensive coaching staff.

Finally, new special teams coordinator Brian Mason will be showing off his unit for the first time. Certainly, a complete look at what Mason has promised to be a more aggressive unit won’t be shown in its entirety, but it will give Irish fans an idea of what Mason has in store for the fall.
