Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Big Ten may need to reconsider, monitor crowd noise

Ohio State got its first taste of life on the road in the COVID-19-era last week when it went to Penn State and came home with a win.

The Buckeyes have now played at home and on the road, and it seemed louder in Beaver Stadium on Saturday than it did in the opener at home against Nebraska. The pumped-in crowd noise, which substitutes for no fans allowed, makes it hard to communicate on the field.

“They pipe in a ton of noise,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “The games I see on TV, you don’t feel that, but there’s 90 decibels going on in the game. Sometimes it’s louder than being in a stadium. It’s very, very difficult to communicate. And I don’t know if that really shows during the game when you’re watching TV, but turn it up to 90 decibels in your house and try to communicate with somebody with a mask on. It’s virtually impossible.”

A member of the Ohio State traveling party told Lettermen Row that it measured the decibel level at Penn State as high as 105 — well above the agreed-upon threshold established by the Big Ten. Every school agreed to the same decibel-number.

But even in the louder-than-expected stadium, the Buckeyes came away with a win, even with the communication challenge. But maybe it’s time to rethink that 90-decibel threshold.

“It is what it is,” Day said. “That’s what was agreed upon but it’s a major challenge.”

Ryan Day, Buckeyes coordinators meet with media

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to break down the Buckeyes as they enter a weird month of November against overmatched opponents. The coaches talked about injuries, which young players need to step up, the offensive line play, cornerbacks and much more.

After the press conference, Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward was joined by Jeremy Birmingham and Spencer Holbrook to break down everything they learned from Day and the assistants, including how Ohio State plans to replace Cameron Brown after his season-ending injury in the secondary. It’s the Practice Report presented by Byers Auto!
