Scarlet Sunrise: Ohio State might get shot at 5-star defensive end

by:borrismart10/12/18

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise! Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Buckeyes chasing Nolan Smith

Ohio State will very likely get its shot with Nolan Smith after all. The 5-star defensive end has long been committed to Georgia, but he announced Wednesday night that he’ll be taking all five official visits beginning with a trip to Alabama. He has yet to specify any other schools, but Lettermen Row recruiting czar Birm noted in Thursday’s Dotting The ‘Eyes that Ohio State is almost certain to get one of those five visits:

It’s probably going to materialize. That’s not to say Ohio State or any other school has a great chance to flip Smith. But the Buckeyes will present him with a depth chart far more favorable at defensive end than any of the other schools he’s going to visit.

Former RBs analyze run game

In the latest BuckIQ, Lettermen Row brought in a pair of former Ohio State running backs to look at where there is improvement to be made and examine a couple breakdowns from last week’s win over Indiana. Both Beanie Wells and Antonio Pittman can see the potential in the latest crop of tailbacks the Buckeyes have at their disposal, and they also pinpointed a couple areas in the BuckIQ film lab where J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber might be more effective moving forward in the hunt for a national championship.

Ben Victor’s turning point

The Thursday question of the day post focused on wide receiver Binjimen Victor and whether he deserves more playing time. Particularly interesting, though, was this quote from Ohio State coach Urban Meyer about what may have sparked a change in Victor’s production.

“It was brought to my attention and I shared that with our team, this all triggered when he started performing on special teams,” Meyer said. “He had a sense of value, a sense of respect. That whole thing about respect: You’ve got to earn it. You’re going to go block and be on special teams, and then good things happen.

Former Ohio State fullback killed

Former Ohio State fullback Tyrone Harrison, who played during the 1989 and 1990 seasons, was killed last weekend when he was hit by a drag racer while walking alongside a road. Harrison was the vice principal of New Brunswick High School in New Jersey.

“As a school district, our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Harrison’s family. This obviously is a difficult time throughout New Brunswick Public Schools, and we’ve arranged for grief counselors to be available to students, faculty and staff,” said Aubrey Johnson, New Brunswick Public Schools superintendent.
