Oh, we’re getting into the weeds now with OU spring football. Now three weeks into everything, and the questions are forming. Maybe not the answers just yet.

But the Unofficial 40 podcast from SoonerScoop is back to talk everything we’ve seen during three lengthy viewing periods of the first seven practices.

The five-man crew (Josh McCuistion, Carey Murdock, Bob Przybylo, Eddie Radosevich, George Stoia) are to break it all down.

Position battles galore

You’re reaching a point where you’re wondering who might play here or there or get the nod at this spot. And there are a lot of intriguing battles for OU.

Backup quarterback? Maybe Michael Hawkins is able to make that type of leap so early? The spots among the offensive line? Goes without saying that is the biggest storyline of spring.

Following the injury to Troy Everett, is Joshua Bates the guy? Or might OU have to dip into the transfer portal and find a center?

Head coach Brent Venables didn’t shut down the portal. And as you examine the trenches, it makes a lot of sense to be on the watch for offensive linemen or a defensive tackle.

The tight end spot continues to be just a drastic turnaround compared to 2023. And that’s just waiting for Jake Roberts and Kaden Helms to be fully healthy.

OU and Portal Moser

Four players have hit the transfer portal for basketball. None of them come as a complete shock out of the blue, but it sure makes like a little difficult.

The Sooners are doing a good job of making initial cuts for elite portal targets. But making cuts not the same thing as becoming the choice.

OU has five scholarships to work with.

2025 class taking off

Here comes Venables and the 2025 class. OU recruiting is picking up some major momentum. And next week could be a fun one.

McCuistion details where OU stands with a couple of big-time targets in defensive lineman Trent Wilson and defensive back Maliek Hawkins.

Not bad.

Plus, early looks at rivalry series for baseball (Bedlam) and softball (Red River Rivalry). It’s all here with the Unofficial 40 podcast from SoonerScoop.
