Penn State will play in plenty of big games this fall. But, two of them made On3’s list of the Big Ten’s most important games in 2024. That leads today’s newsstand, which also includes headlines from around the Internet that focus on the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

On3 national columnist Jesse Simonton is continuing his conference-by-conference preseason preview series this week. The most recent installment focuses on the most important game for each Big Ten team. For Penn State, the pick is an obvious one: The Lions’ Nov. 2 home date with Ohio State. Simonton writes:

“Is this the year James Franklin gets the money off his back and starts winning an upset or two that spurs the Nittany Lions back the Big Ten title game for the first time since 2016?

“Franklin is (in)famously just 4-16 against Michigan and Ohio State. The Wolverines aren’t on the schedule this fall, but the Buckeyes are and it caps a very tricky three-week stretch for Penn State, which plays at USC and Wisconsin. Penn State has a playoff-caliber team, but we’ll find out if the Nittany Lions are more than that if they can finally unseat Ohio State atop the Big Ten standings.”

The Lions are also featured as a different team’s most important opponent. That is Wisconsin, who hosts Penn State on Oct. 26.

“Although Wisconsin plays Alabama and at USC in the first month, the Badgers should still be 5-2 when it welcomes the Nittany Lions to town,” Simonton writes. “An upset over the Nittany Lions would not only give Fickell his first signature win with the program but provide some juice before a three-week stretch that goes at Iowa, Oregon and at Nebraska.”

Quote of the day

“If you’re projecting Adirika long-term, you’ll probably like him as a three-technique. He’s around 6-2 and a half, 280, so he’s not really elite in terms of his length or frame, but I think he kind of makes up for it with his effort level, his quickness and his ability to finish behind the line of scrimmage. So he’s a guy who we really liked his junior film and we’re looking forward to seeing more from him. But I think he’s a good get from South Florida for Penn State and a guy who can certainly create some disruption in the interior.”
