Rhett Lashlee addresses SMU's tough 2024 schedule

SMU running back Velton Gardner is graduating and entering the NCAA Transfer Portal this spring, he announced on Twitter on Thursday. He’ll have one year of eligibility at his next stop.

“First, I want to thank God for allowing me to play the game at such a high level,” Gardner wrote. “I also want to thank the SMU staff and coaches. After long talks with my family and mentors, I will be entering the transfer portal as a grad transfer.”

The Dallas (Tex.) Skyline product transferred into the program from Kansas before the 2022 season. He played in 18 games for the Mustangs with one start.

After rushing 70 times for 368 yards and a score in 2022, he had 23 attempts for 137 yards and a touchdown in 2023.

At Kansas, Gardner started hot with 10 games and a start as a freshman in 2019. He had his best season with the Jayhawks in 2020 with 325 yards on 72 attempts before starting the first three games of 2021 then redshirting.

For his career, he’s rushed 229 times for 1,024 yards and six touchdowns.

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Gardner was the No. 8 overall athlete in the country and the No. 105 overall prospect in Texas.
