Tennessee Baseball Luc Lipcius Reacts To Vols National Championship On The Porch

Tennessee baseball brought home the first national championship in program history earlier this week and former Vol first baseman Luc Lipcius was all smiles on the final Porch podcast of the season.

The Vols found themselves as the last team standing in their seventh trip to Omaha and their 26th career game in the College World Series. Tennessee’s College World Series record improved to 14-12 and Monday’s finish is the best in program history, surpassing the 1951 squad who capped as national runner-up to Oklahoma.

The win marked the 24th team national championship for all Tennessee sports and the first since women’s track & field in 2009. Monday’s win also made the Vols the first team in Southeastern Conference history to reach 60 wins in a single season. Tennessee became just the fourth SEC program ever to win the regular season title, conference tournament title and College World Series title in the same season, joining Vanderbilt (2019) and LSU (2009, 1993). The last team who won at least 60 games and the national championship was Wichita State back in 1989.

Tennessee became the first No. 1 overall seed to claim the College World Series Finals championship since Miami back in 1999 and was just the fourth No. 1 overall seed to reach the Finals series.

Lipcius breaks down the College World Series win, what this means to him as a former player and how this team is one of the greatest in college baseball history.

About Luc Lipcius

Lipcius ended his UT career as the program’s home run king, launching his 40th career longball in his final game in a Volunteers uniform in 2022. In fact, the first baseman belted three home runs vs. Notre Dame in Super Regional play, battling teammate Evan Russell for the crown. Of note, VFL and MLB Hall of Famer Todd Helton finished his Tennessee career with 38 home runs. Current Tennessee first baseman Blake Burke recently broke the record with his 41st career long ball coming in game two at Auburn on April 6 and finished at 50 for his career. Current second baseman Christian Moore has since surpassed Burke and finished at 61 career round trippers, after tying Burke for the third time and then moving past him with a three home run day in game three at Kentucky earlier this season on April 21.

The first baseman was also known for having a good glove while his bat came around towards the end of his career. Lipcius played a key role in Tennessee’s [then] program-record 57-win campaign in 2022 and was a fixture in the lineup for back-to-back Eastern Division titles, including a sweep of the Southeastern Conference titles in 2022.

A multiple Academic All-District selection, SEC Academic Honor Roll selectee, Academic All-American member and 2022 Community Service Team member – the first baseman finished his Tennessee career batting .275 with 40 home runs, 123 RBI, 158 runs scored, 34 doubles and 27 stolen bases across six seasons on The Hill.
