Tony Vitello discusses midweek victory over Queens

The top-ranked Tennessee baseball team defeated Queens on Tuesday to improve to 40-9 on the season after a 6-3 victory inside the confines of Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The No. 1 Vols won their seventh-straight Southeastern Conference series down in Gainesville, Fla. over the weekend against Florida, but did suffer an upset defeat last week on Tuesday against Lipscomb. However, that was not the case on Tuesday as Tennessee found a late inning rally, sparked by a single from Dalton Bargo in the seventh, which was capped by a three-run home run from Dylan Dreiling.

Right-handed reliever Marcus Phillips got the start on Tuesday, but he struggled mightily with three walks, a hit by pitch and letting two runs cross in just 20 pitches. Dylan Loy came on in relief and gave the Vols 3.1 innings of stellar work.

Queens managed to get the bases loaded in the ninth with one out and the go-ahead run at the plate, but Tony Vitello called on Aaron Combs to close out the victory. Combs struck out back-to-back batters and put the comeback attempt to bed.
