Arizona State quarterback Paul Tyson enters NCAA transfer portal
Arizona State quarterback and former Alabama player Paul Tyson hit the NCAA transfer portal on Monday following the conclusion of the 2022 regular season.
Tyson was only with the Sun Devils for one season after leaving Tuscaloosa at the end of 2021. He didn’t record a stat for Arizona State, however, after his first transfer, and he will have to appeal for immediate eligibility if he wants to play in 2023.
During his final season at Alabama, Tyson provided depth as the No. 2 quarterback behind Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. He threw 10 completions for 150 yards in the five games he saw action in last year.

Coming out of Hewitt-Trussville High School in Alabama, Tyson was one of two quarterbacks Nick Saban signed in the 2019 class. He and his fellow 2019 QB, Taulia Tagovailoa, ended up transferring. Tyson was a four-star prospect and the No. 329 overall recruit in the 2019 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus.
Arizona State fired head coach Herm Edwards in September, just three games (and two losses) into the 2022 season. The Sun Devils finished the year with a 3-9 record.

Transfer portal background
The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.
The process of entering the portal goes through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request.
Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship is no longer valid. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school does not have to reoffer a scholarship.
