Rodney Brown, a guard who spent his freshman season last year at California, has committed to Virginia Tech out of the transfer portal.

Brown made the announcement that he’d be joining the Hokies on social media on Monday.

Brown appeared off the bench in all 32 of Cal’s games this last year at an average of 14 minutes a contest.

In those appearances, Brown averaged 3.5 points and 1.1 rebounds. He also shot 40.6% from the field as well as 39.7% from three. That was good for seventh-most for the Golden Bears in points per game as well as third-best in three-point percentage.

Brown, a native of Temecula, California, played high school basketball at Rancho Christian. He was a three-star prospect there and the No. 181 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranked as a Top-40 SG and a Top-30 player out of his state.

Brown is the No. 410 overall transfer per On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players. He was also the No. 83 SG in the portal per those same rankings.

Brown is one of six players from last year’s team at Cal to transfer in this portal cycle. That group also includes Devin Askew, Grant Newell, ND Okafor, Monty Boswer, and Jalen Celestine. Brown is now the first among them to commit to a new program. In turn, the program has added C Lee Dort (Vanderbilt) and F BJ Omot (North Dakota).

As for Virginia Tech, Brown is the third portal commitment to this point that will be coming to Blacksburg. He will join the Hokies alongside G Jordan Ivy-Curry (UTSA) and F Ben Burnham (Charleston). They arrive after seven players have left the team in this cycle. Tyler Nickel (Vanderbilt), Lynn Kidd (Miami), and Rodney Rice (Maryland) have all committed elsewhere while Sean Pedulla, MJ Collins, Mylyjael Poteat, and John Camden are all still going through the transfer process. That group includes several of the program’s main contributors from last season where Virginia Tech went 19-15.
