Florida State transfer defensive lineman Dennis Briggs Jr. has committed to Illinois, he announced via social media. The 2024 season will be his seventh year of college football.

Briggs appeared in 10 games this past season at Florida State, totaling 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks in that time. During his six years with the Seminoles, he had 78 tackles to go with 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. He took a redshirt as a freshman in 2018 and suffered a season-ending injury in 2021, which is why he was seeking a medical hardship waiver.

Briggs’ best season at Florida State came in 2019 when he had a career-high 28 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and his first career sack.

Dennis Briggs played high school football at Gateway (Fla.) High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 291 overall recruit in the 2018 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Although Florida State saw a number of opt-outs for the Orange Bowl against Georgia, Briggs knew he wanted to play in the game. He wanted to finish out the year with his teammates before determining his future, especially considering the Seminoles finished outside the top four of the final College Football Playoff rankings.

“It was real important, being able to have a final moment with all my brothers,” Briggs said, via Warchant’s Ira Schoffel. “We put in blood sweat and tears from January to January. Just coming out here and despite all the odds against us — and some of our brothers that did what’s best for them, for their future — our goal was just to come out and compete and give our best.”

Florida State has lost 20 players to the portal since winning the ACC Championship this past season. However, the Seminoles are once again looking like one of the biggest winners in the portal, checking in at No. 4 in the On3 Team Transfer Portal Rankings. One of their biggest transfer additions is former Georgia EDGE Marvin Jones Jr. — son of Marvin Jones Sr. and the No. 25-ranked player in the portal, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.
